FMS Grade 8- Level 3 IB MYP
Fairfield Middle School is proud to be an IB World Authorized School in partnership with Tuckahoe Middle School and J.R. Tucker High School. As part of the HCPS IB programs including George H. Moody Middle School and Henrico High School, we are committed to the IB ideals.
IB Mission Statement
The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.
Tenants of IB
The FMS IB MYP program is committed to following the three tenants of IB: Holistic Education, Intercultural Education, and Communication. Through all subject areas and in school activities the tenants of IB will be stressed.
Community and Service
The 8th Grade- Level 3 students are required to complete 20 hours of Community and Service (C & S) by the end of the school year. Continuing the journey of discovery in both aspects of community and service, the students will begin preparing for Community, Action, and Service in MYP 4 and 5. Students can acquire half (10 hours) of the required 20 hours during the summer. The other half (10 hours) must be accumulated during the school year. Access to C & S will be provided both at FMS and through activities in the general community. The C & S logs are collected quarterly for review of hours. A C & S Reflection is required for each quarter.
Areas of Interaction
The Areas of Interaction (AoI’s) are the lenses through which all IB subject and content areas are taught. The AoI’s allow cross curricular connections and interdisciplinary units to develop naturally throughout the program. Each grade level develops the students ability to identify and link the AoI’s. The poster to the left is the 8thGrade Areas of Interaction Progression. To print the 8th Grade Areas of Interaction Progression Poster, click here: 8th Areas of Interaction.
The IB MYP Curriculum Model is utilized at FMS. In 8th grade students will take Language A (English), Humanities (Civics), Technology (Occupational Technology), Mathematics (Course Algebra I or Geometry), Arts (Art, Band, Chorus or Strings), Sciences (Earth Science), Physical Education (Health and PE), and Language B (French, Mandarin Chinese, or Spanish).
IB students take the 8th curriculum class, Technology, by attending the class one day per week for ninety minutes through the Block A class. In 8th Grade Technology, the students learn culinary and occupational skills.
The elective classes are listed above as Arts (Art, Band, Chorus, or Strings).
Learner Profile Traits
Each subject area includes lessons, activities, and practice in developing the IB Learner Profile Traits (LP Traits). Included in each IB unit are links to LP Traits for teachers and students to utilize during the lessons. LP Trait connections will be included in the IB assessments in each subject area. School-wide there is a focus on one LP Trait per month for character education focus.
